Link thoughts into a mind map
Add a link to another thought and tap through your ideas. Learn how to add a link, follow it, see what links back, and what happens when a thought goes away.
You can add a link to another thought. It shows up as a small card, and tapping the card opens that thought. It is a simple way to connect ideas and keep linked notes together. One thought that comes back can lead you on to the others.
Add a link
- In the editor, tap in the row above the keyboard. Or tap "Add block" at the end of the thought. The new block goes right after the one you are in.
- Choose "Linked thought". A list of your thoughts opens.
- Search by title or text, or pick one from the list. With no search, it shows the 20 thoughts you changed most recently.
- Tap the thought you want. The link appears in the editor as a card, right after the block you were in.
To remove a link, tap on its card and choose "Delete", or swipe it left. The other thought is not touched. If nothing matches your search, you see "No thoughts match". If search is still getting ready, you see "Search is catching up. Showing recent thoughts for now."
The list leaves out the thought you are editing, thoughts you already linked, and archived thoughts. A thought can link to another one only once.
Follow a link
Tap a card to open the thought it points to. That thought has its own cards, so you can keep going. A card only shows one step. To go further, open the thought and look at its cards.
Opening a thought from a link counts as a view. But it does not change the due date. The thought does not go back to waiting. See How resurfacing works.
Linked from
Links go both ways when you read. At the bottom of a thought, "Linked from" lists the thoughts that link to it. Tap one to open it. If more than 50 link to it, you see the first 50 and "and N more".
Deleted and archived thoughts
- If you delete a thought, links to it stay. Their cards say "This thought was deleted". You can remove them in the editor.
- An archived thought still opens from a link. Its card is dimmed and says "Archived". See Pin or archive a thought.
Good to know
- A link is part of the thought you add it to. Adding or removing one counts as an edit to that thought.
- Links are in your backups.
- Links do not add text to search. Search finds the linked thought by its own words.
